Would you Still Work if you won Big On the Lottery?
Would you still work if you won a Lottery? say $10 Million dollars?
It’s a tricky question isn’t? your totally honest answer would probably be similar to Karen St John “ABSOLUTELY NOT…WHY TAKE AJOB FROM SOMEONE,IF YOU DONT NEED IT”
Or something like ““Hell, no, are you serious?”
Winning big at the lottery is something many of us wish would happen, after all, getting rich, fast, is what many of us believe is the answer to many of our problems. It’s precisely the reason why thousands all over the country cling to the thought of someday getting lucky, even if the nearly insurmountable odds are stacked against them—I read somewhere that you’re more likely to get struck by lightning twice in one day that to win the lottery.
But whether you believe in the lottery or not, try to place yourself in the shoes of someone who just struck it rich through the lotto. What would you do with your winnings? Would you buy a new house? How about a new car? Go on a much needed perma-holiday? Donate a percentage of your jackpot to charity? More importantly, would you even keep your daily 9 to 5 job, seeing as how you just possibly won more cash than you were likely to earn throughout your entire lifetime?
I asked this exact question on my Facebook page, but I never expected to get so many responses. Perhaps the idea of getting lucky and rich right away seems to strike a chord amongst many people. Anyway, here are some of the answers I received.
From St. Pariah “Yes, but the work I’d do wouldn’t be 9-5. I would do a bunch of different things, just to learn the skills.
Kathleen Taylor Ewers opines, “Yes, cause my purpose doesnt come from money…so one way or another I’d work, so I would be all I am created to be.”
Karen St John answered “ABSOLUTELY NOT…WHY TAKE AJOB FROM SOMEONE,IF YOU DONT NEED IT”
And as for me, Yes I would Still work. What worth is the money gained through luck – it might as well go the way it came. Work can help me retain and achieve the success which cannot be drained off in any way. Honestly speaking, money is not a real wealth. Knowledge and hard-work only gives us a real wealth. So I would still work. I would be finding new ways on how to invest some of my fortune. I would still work After I floated down from cloud nine
I think I would still hold my basic belief that achievement and purposeful work are essential to a happy, productive life. After all, if money alone bought happiness, then all rich people would be all happy, and that’s not true.
If you asked me, completely quitting your day job can either be a bad or good move. For many people, having money allows them to pursue their true interests in life, instead of being chained to a job they resent, so the money can lead to a much-needed career change. This is something echoed by St. Pariah, who writes, “A common reason why many people don’t do for a living what they love to do is that they lack the resources to manifest it as a source of income.”
On the other hand, quitting your job and not doing anything at all in its place just because you’re now rich is a foolhardy move. The world’s richest self-made people got to where they are now because they worked hard for it, and despite their riches, they still continue to busy themselves with work or whatever it is that interests them. This should be your goal in life—to pursue a career that you truly love and are willing to pour your all into.
What about you? what are you thought? would you still work if you won millions of dollars in the lottery? Share Your answer in the comment below.

Yes I would still work if I won the lottery Easther, although it would be entirely focussed on helping others.

Hi David,

Hi Easther, Great question! What I do, now, to help others be the best they can be truly is so fulfilling. Because I can flex my life around it means that it gives me great pleasure and making a difference in others means fulfillment within. So if I won the lottery it wouldn’t change who I am or what I do and I would continue to donate in a much grander way to charities or organizations to make a bigger difference. Thank you for this question. Awesome! Warmest Regards Shirley

The answer of course for me is 100% yes. There are many reasons – including teaching my daughter good work ethics.
But lets take a look at the really successful entrepreneurs who make 100million… they still work and they work incredibly hard and have a diary that is crazy.
I do what I do because I love it… every year I earn more… and every year I work more!

Easther, this is a fun question to think about. As someone who is getting up there, and actually spent a year not working while I figured out what I wanted to do in my new locale/life in southwest Florida, I realized that retired people get old fast. Many who look forward to retirement, soon get sick and pass shortly after they move into their “golden years.” I think staying active, and using your mind, keeps you young. And if your work is something you love, then why quit. Thanks for asking this question!
Val Heisey recently posted..How’s your day… do you have a schedule for all your stuff?
Hi Val,
I agree! keeping active is important and As with other parts of your body, your mind needs exercise, this will definitely keeps you young.
Thanks for sharing your though Val
Hi Easther, I have to admit, this wasn’t easy for me to answer. I really am “anti-lottery” for many reasons but mostly because I feel that it gives people false hope.
However, for the sake of your post… If I won that much money from the lottery I would definately work but not with the traditional 9-5 job.
I would continue to work as an entrepreneur and find new ways to invest my “new found” money in order to extend it.
Kudos to you for sparking such a really good conversation starter on your facebook profile

Great Answer! totally right lotter gives people false hope, and if they don’t win they’ll keep on trying, in the end they get addicted!
What a great fun post! I have asked this question as well a couple times via social media. Its pretty interesting to see peoples thoughts on this. Did you know 95% of lottery winners go broke within the first 3 years of gaining their winnings. Pretty crazy.
Jessica recently posted..Znz one- big scam or legitimate way to earn money online?
Hey Jessica,
yeah, I heard about t hat they lotter winners go broke! that’s because, they spend it all without thinking! crazy
It would definitely depend on the type of work I was in Easther. But what I would say is if you do win the lottery and you’re not sure what to do with it, I’ll be more than happy to help you spend it. LOL

Hi Easther,
What a fabulous question and post. My answer is yes, I would continue to do what I do because I love it. I’d probably get out there and do even more of it. I’d also make sure my favourite charities were taken care of too – that’s very important.

I don’t know if I would quit my job but firstly I would pay off those nasty bills and then I would donate some of your lottery winnings to those who really need their day brightened. Whether it’s $100.00 or $1,000.00, your generosity counts. It would also be a good idea to put some money back into business, ou know the age-old saying, “you have to spend money to make money.”. I would also help relatives and family member who are struggling a bit.
A good question. Thanks.
Hey Mahbubur
Great Answer!
absolutely you would want to help out relatives and family member who are struggling.
thanks for visiting and commenting Mahbubur!
Oh how much I love the idea of being able to do whatever I have always wished for, if I had all that money in my pocket. After all who doesn’t like sudden windfall, that sudden bout of luck coming one’s way.
But coming to your main question, Yes I would work even after becoming so rich, but I would choose what I do, it won’t necessarily be for money though. I’d be able to pursue my interests without worrying how to make my ends meet.

Hi, Esther,
What an interesting question to ask. I appreciate your insights as well.
For many people, the HONEST answer to this question can tell if what they are currently doing is fulfilling for them. For example, one of my mentors is a dentist. He loves his profession and is still practising (part time, choosing his own hours) even though he has established a very successful network marketing buisness.
The key thing is – OPTIONS in life. We can choose to stay in the job or do a whole bunch of other things that means more to us
