Five Basic SEO Concepts Every Blogger Must Get a Hang Of
I remember the first time I tried to get a grip of SEO; I was completely frizzled by the complexities and diversity of the subject. As I tried to surf various blogs for information, I found out that even the gurus differ in their opinions of useful strategies. What some considered being of value, others would consider it to be useless and a newbie like me was left all alone to figure things out, all on my own. Well, eventually through months of hit and miss methods, I understood that SEO is not just rote learning of rules and technicalities. It’s a field that demands research, experiments, and innovative thinking even for the most basic concepts. Being a blogger, you can’t do without knowing the nitty-gritty of SEO, and you can understand the basics of SEO and read as much as you can on the topic. But you must not stop at the reading, rather you must practice what you read, observe the results and then figure out if the strategy was working well for your blog. Following are five basic concepts that you should understand because these are the foundation that branches out to other important methodologies.
1). Read Everything You Can About Search Engines and How They Work
What is a search engine? How does it work? How it ranks website? These are basic questions to which you must find and apprehend the answers. There are two major search engines that you must read about; Google and Bing. Each of these two have their own ranking algorithm so don’t limit yourself to just studying about Google because millions of searches are conducted through Bing as well. Study about robots, crawlers and rules/regulations of these search engines. Spend at least a week or more in just reading and finding information about search engines before you go on to something else.
2). Read Everything about Keywords
Keywords are short words or phrases people enter in the search bar of a search engine. Based on these keywords, the engine comes up with results that host the words on their site. For bloggers, getting the right keyword placement in a site is crucial, because if they don’t, the site will miss out potential traffic for the specific search phrases. You need to conduct an in depth study of keywords and how you can create combinations of specific words to get constant unique visitors.
3). Read About On-page Optimization
On page optimization is about placing the correct keywords in specific pages and Meta titles of your blog. It also includes fixing broken links, optimizing the site design for better usability and readability. On page optimization is a plethora of strategies, ideas and preferences because every SEO professionals have their unique style of optimizing a page. You will have to learn and experiment constantly to have a clear idea of what works best.
4). Know About Link Building
Link building means acquiring links from other websites and blogs. People make the mistake of looking at back links from SEO perspective, but link building is not all about link juice, it is also about traffic. For bloggers who have adsense, the more traffic means the more chances of getting clicks and thus more earnings. You have to co-ordinate with other bloggers via blog commenting or guest posting in order to have their readers visit your blog. You have to reach out to a massive audience and for this you will have to write appealing content and submit them at reputable blogs.
5). Social Networking for Increased Rankings
Social networking wasn’t a part of SEO until the last couple of years. Thanks to Facebook and LinkedIn, companies are now actually looking up to social media strategies for developing a close relationship with their target audience. This is also a great way for attracting a massive amount of traffic to your website without having to depend solely on search engines. Such is the popularity of social networks that there are people who have successful careers as “social media specialists”.
As mentioned before, you will come across conflicting strategies and ideas and you need to spend at least 3 months in just reading, studying, understanding and summarizing SEO concepts before you can implement. Lastly, remember that SEO strategies keep changing and what’s considered an ideal approach last year might turn out to be obsolete this year.

Hi Easther, thanks for sharing another great topic about SEO. I guess the best way to learn SEO is by putting things into practice and keep experimenting with different techniques until you see results. One thing I have learn’t is that one must be patient when it comes to achieving good results with SEO. SEO takes time and sometimes people loose patient and giveup.
It is also important to keep upto date with the SEO world and find out what’s new and what’s old and learn much as possible by readind and researching.
